Students - Withdrawal & Refunds

At times students may find themselves unable to complete a course for personal reasons or due to circumstances beyond their control – an unexpected TDY, hospitalization, etc. Withdrawing is a serious decision and should not be undertaken lightly. Students are urged to talk with their instructors to see if there is any way to complete the course. Students are still responsible for doing all the required work, but UMUC faculty will go to great lengths to help students complete a course.

If, though, students must withdraw, they need to understand the procedures and be aware of the implications of withdrawing. Students who must withdraw from a course are responsible for completing the Application for Withdrawal (UMR-216). Stopping payment on checks for registration fees or not paying at registration does not constitute an official withdrawal or relieve the student of his or her financial obligation to UMUC.

Never attending or ceasing to attend class(es) also does not constitute a withdrawal. UMUC cannot accept withdrawals verbally over the telephone.

On the Application for Withdrawal, students must include reasons for the action, obtain all necessary signatures, and submit the form at the education center where they enrolled. Students who do not formally withdraw will automatically receive a failing grade and forfeit any refund.

GoArmyEd students must withdraw through the GoArmyEd portal. (For information about GoArmyEd and the GoArmyEd portal, click here. Additionally, Army students can access the GoArmyEd portal directly or contact their Education Services Officer (ESO) or Counselor.)

An Application for Withdrawal cannot be initiated after the beginning of the final exam or last class meeting, whichever comes first.

For Standard Three-Credit Courses:
Official withdrawal % Refundable
Withdrawal before the first class meeting 100%
Withdrawal if 0 to 12.5% of the total class meetings have been held 75%
Withdrawal if 12.5% to 25% of the total class meetings have been held 50%
Withdrawal if 25% to 100% of the total class meetings have been held NO REFUND

Distance Education Courses
Because DE does not have actual “class meetings,” refunds are calculated thinking in terms of the number of calendar days between the first and last day of the class.

Students in DE classes still need to follow the normal withdrawal procedures noted above. The refund for withdrawal from distance education courses, however, is computed from the date the Application for Withdrawal is formally initiated. The amount of the refund is based on the time that has elapsed since the beginning of the course, using the same percentages as in the above table.

NOTE: 4:30 p.m. (Japan Standard Time) marks the end of each of the refund periods shown above.

Distance Education students may withdraw from a course up to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Japan Standard Time, of the week before the course ends. Exact withdrawal deadline dates can be found on the Asia DE site, under Weekly Calendar -> Student Calendar.
