-- It's as easy as 1-2-3.

1.  Getting started. Go to the GoArmyEd portal.
If you are new to using Army tuition assistance, click on the New Users tab. Provide the general information and click "Submit" to get a username and password so that you can begin using the GoArmyEd portal.

Take advantage of the Soldier Quick Start Training available on the GoArmyEd homepage. And be sure to see your Army Counselor or ESO. You must have your Army Counselor or ESO approve your choice of school and degree plan and issue a Statement of Understanding (SOU) regarding tuition assistance. Ask for "UMUC Asia" as your home institution! UMUC Asia offers certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor's degrees with classes available at your local installation and through distance education.

If you have used Army tuition assistance in the last two years, you have most likely already received login instructions through your AKO email account. Using those instructions, take the training course to learn how to use the portal. If you cannot locate the email, simply follow the instructions above for soldiers who are new to using TA. GoArmyEd will recognize your SSN and automatically walk you through the steps for getting access to the portal.

2.  Getting your SOCAD Student Agreement/documented degree plan set up and completing the Common Application form.
Once you have selected your home institution and degree plan, the next step is to get a SOCAD Student Agreement or documented degree plan. Request transcripts to be sent to UMUC Asia from all previous colleges and universities. Army tuition assistance requires Soldiers to have a SOCAD Student Agreement or documented degree plan by the end of their second class with their home institution or before completing nine credits at any school for classes that begin on or after 1 May 2006. (The credits you have earned from UMUC and other schools prior to 1 May 2006 do not count toward this requirement.) Don't delay. If you already have a paper SOCAD Student Agreement, take it to your Army Education Center Counselor to have it scanned into your GoArmyEd Student Record

Complete the Common Application in the GoArmyEd portal, making sure that UMUC Asia is listed as your home institution.

3. Getting registered for classes.
Decide which course(es) you'd like to take, either by visiting your local UMUC Asia Field Representative, by visiting the UMUC Asia Web site or by viewing the UMUC Asia schedule through the GoArmyEd portal. When you are on the GoArmyEd homepage, click "Enroll or Drop/Withdraw from a Course" and then "Request TA and Enroll in a Course." Follow the steps to navigate to the "Add Classes" link, and search the "Integrated Course Schedule." Select UMUC Asia from the dropdown list of colleges. Once you find the appropriate course, click the check mark next to the course and follow the steps to complete your enrollment request.

UMUC Asia will receive your enrollment request automatically from the GoArmyEd portal. Your request is considered "accepted" unless you receive a rejection email.

Textbooks for on-site classes can be purchased through UMUC Asia Field Representatives. Textbooks for distance education classes can be ordered online.

Additional Information:

Current address and phone number: Always use your current APO address and DSN phone number when that information is requested in the portal. If you put in your permanent U.S. address and phone number, it will be difficult for us to contact you.

Dates and times of courses: UMUC Asia class start and end times will always be listed in the GoArmyEd portal with the appropriate times for Asia locations. However, the GoArmyEd portal server is located in the U.S. Eastern time zone. This means, for example, that if the registration start date of 7 August 2006 for Term I classes, you can use the portal to enroll as of 1300 hours on 6 August 2006 in Korea, Japan, and Okinawa.

Location of courses: The GoArmyEd portal lists the schedule of classes by course type, not by Education Center location—e.g., all ENGL 101 classes at all locations in the Asian Division, then all HIST 157 classes, etc. To register for a class at a particular military installation in Asia, find the course you want (e.g., ENGL 101) and look under the "Room" designator. There you will see "Camp Humphreys" or whatever class location you want. The "Room" designation confirms that you are enrolling for the specific class at the particular location you want. Distance Education courses will have "Distance Education" as the "Room" designation.
