Welcome to University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in Asia. This section is to help those who are considering studying with UMUC get started by laying out the steps required and the order in which to take them.

Consult with an Academic Advisor Early On
It is wise to have your credits earned at previous colleges and universities and potential credits you may have from your military experience and other sources evaluated early on in your UMUC career. Maryland Academic Advisors travel at least once each term to most locations in Asia. At any time, however, you can consult with a UMUC Academic Advisor by telephone, e-mail, mail, or fax for course selection, guidance, degree plans, or general information or assistance. You can also request a Preliminary Evaluation (unofficial evaluation) or an Official Evaluation for a specific degree plan. Pick up the request form from your local Field Representative.

  • Preliminary Evaluations can be requested before you take your first course with UMUC or really at any time. They are unofficial, so photocopies or personal copies of any transcripts or military training will suffice.
  • Official Evaluations should be requested as soon as you have taken two classes (or 6 credits) with UMUC. All transcripts and documentation must be sent directly from your former school or organization to UMUC’s main administrative offices on Yokota AB in Tokyo:

Ask your Field Representative for basic information
UMUC Asia has Field Representatives working at nearly every class site. Your local Field Rep will be happy to answer your questions and provide you with a Catalog, current class schedule, and other important information and support. Field Representatives conduct course registration during the two weeks before each term.

Take a look at the current schedule of courses to be offered at your site and via Distance Education.
  • Traditional face-to-face classes are offered over an accelerated, eight-week term, typically meeting twice a week in the evenings (e.g., Mon & Wed 1645 - 1930), so the pace of an eight-week term is twice as fast as that of a traditional 15- or 16-week semester.

Meeting twice a week may be the norm for many Asian Division classes, but in reality UMUC offers classes over a wide range of formats specifically geared to the schedules and needs of adult students. UMUC Asia offers classes, depending on the size and needs of installations, in the evenings, over the lunch hour, at “teatime” or late in the afternoon, on weekends, on a 1 cr. and 3 cr. basis, really at times and in formats when students need them.

  • Students can take classes in a regular classroom setting with a faculty member or via Distance Education (DE). DE courses are offered online over 10 weeks via WebTycho, UMUC’s own online course delivery platform. WebTycho allows for online discussions with the instructor and other students in the class. Students can log into these virtual classrooms from any computer connected to the Internet.

In addition to Asia-based DE courses, Asian Division students can also take UMUC DE courses originating in Europe and Maryland, at Asian Division tuition rates. Asia alone offers more than 100 courses per term and when combined with those available from UMUC Europe and UMUC Stateside, this means that students at any education center can choose in any given term from more than 300 different DE courses with almost 600 class sections.

Choose courses appropriate to your level.
  • Students starting college and those who have only attended colleges or universities for a short time (less than two years) should look for courses in the 100 or 200 number range. These are lower-level courses generally appropriate for students with limited college experience. Courses numbered in the 300 and 400 range are for more advanced students and usually require certain background course work at the lower level. You may wish to consult a UMUC Academic Advisor or an education center Counselor before registering.
  • Most courses carry college credit. A total of 60 credits in specified areas is required for an Associate degree and 120 cr. for a Bachelor's degree.
  • When reading a course description, take note of any prerequisite courses. Prerequisites are courses that give you the foundation required to enroll in a higher-level course.
  • Before enrolling in any mathematics and English courses, you must take a placement test. This test takes approximately one hour and is administered on site online.
  • Not sure where to get started? Look at the General Education Requirements (GERs) under the associate-level GERs in the current UMUC Asia Catalog. Students wisely start their college careers by taking courses that meet General Education Requirements. Most sites offer several GER courses each term.

Investigate Financial Aid Options
Looking for funding? There are several options available:
  • Active Duty Military can receive up to 100% Tuition Assistance (please see the Military Education Center or Navy College Office for more information).
  • Military spouses may apply for tuition assistance through Army Emergency Relief, Navy/Marine Corps Relief, or the Air Force Aid Society. These programs often pay up to 50% of the cost of tuition.
  • Several installation organizations offer local scholarship programs. Check with the Officers and/or Enlisted Spouses Clubs.
  • UMUC offers a variety of its own scholarships. Talk with your Field Representative for details.
  • Federal Financial Aid programs such as the Pell Grant and William D. Ford Federal Direct Lending programs are also available. You can apply for aid throughout the academic year.
