UMUC promotes the use of library technology and resources, teaches a required library research course, provides assistance for library research, and provides access to a variety of online library resources via its Web page.
Library ResourcesStudents may access an extensive array of online journal databases and national and international newspapers at the UMUC Information and Library Services (ILS) Web site or through the library link in WebTycho, UMUC’s online course delivery system. Current students, faculty, and staff may access nearly 140 databases, most of which contain full-text articles, covering subjects including arts and humanities, business and management, computer and information systems, physical and life sciences, and the social sciences. If only an article citation is available, a link is provided to DocumentExpress, a document delivery service which enables authorized library users to request full-text research materials and have them delivered electronically as a portable document format (PDF) file.
The ILS Web site is the access point for high-quality resources, services, and instruction available to UMUC students, faculty, and staff worldwide. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
Instructional Tutorials: “Learn How To…” use the library resources with interactive or multimedia instructional materials which include such topics as: how to search and use the Internet, how to evaluate and cite sources correctly, how to avoid plagiarism, developing research and writing skills.
Articles & More: More than 140 subscription databases are accessible to students and faculty. Many of these databases offer full-text material or links to full-text material. Hundreds of online journals, newspapers and periodicals are available to research a wide range of topics either by journal title or subject.
E-books/NetLibrary: UMUC provides a growing collection of full-text books online.
Ask a Librarian: Assistance from a librarian is available 24/7 via email, Instant Messaging (IM), or telephone.
Technical Help: Technical help is available by email or telephone for help with such areas as login/barcode questions, browser and databases issues, and wireless connection.
Get It Delivered: Full-text journal articles, book chapters, and tables of contents that are not accessible in an ILS database can be delivered electronically in PDF format upon request using the Document Express feature.
Faculty Services: Librarians are available to meet the special needs of faculty through workshops, online class visits, e-reserves, a plagiarism detection service (Turnitin.com), and interlibrary book loans.
UMUC’s online library book collection is available in the netLibrary database. See Using netLibrary for more information.
At most military installations where UMUC Asia offers courses, the Army, Air Force, or Navy maintains a library, usually staffed by professional librarians. The combined holdings of the libraries, including several million books and audio-visual materials, are available to all UMUC students. Many libraries also have computers with Internet connections as well as computers which connect to a selection of research databases available from inside the library only.
While a growing number of full-text e-books, journals and other research sources are available through the electronic library, local installation libraries remain a valuable source of books and other research materials for papers and projects. Students and faculty are encouraged to visit the local base library and learn what resources and services are offered. Below are links to library Web or information sites for a number of base libraries in the area:

UMUC offers LIBS 150 Information Literacy and Research Methods, a required one-credit course, that focuses on developing information literacy skills and emphasizes proficiency in the research process, including selecting and evaluating research materials, performing effective searches, and correctly citing resources to avoid plagiarism.
Students may access the Peck Virtual Library Classroom, known as VLIB 101 in WebTycho, as a free resource to help them improve their research skills. All currently enrolled students may obtain reference assistance or information about the library resources available to them while they are studying with UMUC here.
