"Preparing Effective, Caring, and Collaborative Educators for a Global Society"
Program Description
Teacher education programs at Bowie State University are designed to develop professionals who are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. The academic program provides candidates with a strong liberal arts foundation, as well as the knowledge and skills needed to be effective classroom teachers. Candidates learn to use technology to enhance learning, to assess pupils using multiple approaches, and to create positive learning environments for a diverse group of learners. An important component of all programs is the enhancement of skills through field-based experiences. During field experiences, candidates observe master teachers, analyze effective teaching strategies, and develop skills in planning and implementing lessons. Candidates also develop positive human relations skills and habits of reflection.

The Bowie State University (BSU) Bachelor of Science in Education degree is only offered through UMUC Asia in Okinawa, Japan, or at the main BSU campus in the State of Maryland. We may be able to arrange for student teaching off-island, but all other required classes must be completed up to student teaching. At this time, education classes are only offered in-classroom (face-to-face), although a few general education and major-specific classes, such as History and English, may be completed online through UMUC. UMUC Asia will assist students who have been formally accepted to the Teacher Education Program with arranging student teaching, internships, and classroom observations in Okinawa or Maryland. However, UMUC Asia cannot guarantee degree completion or teacher certification for students who do not remain in Okinawa to complete the entire degree, or who do not return to Maryland to complete all the requirements. States and local school districts have varying regulations and policies regarding student teaching, therefore, the University cannot guarantee that all school districts will grant permission to enter the classroom. Students who are unable to complete the program in Okinawa or Maryland are responsible for informing themselves about the student teaching requirements in their state, locality and/or the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools. |
