Science Education

SCED302 Analysis of Teaching/Secondary (3 cr.)
An overview of the teaching process. Topics include techniques of diagnostic and prescriptive teaching, classroom management, instruments for assessing teaching performance, micro-teaching, and disruptive students. A school-based practicum is required.

SCED304 Methods of Teaching/Secondary (3 cr.)
An integrated study of practices and processes related to teaching in the secondary school. Both general methods for all secondary students and content-specific methods are covered. A school-based practicum is required.

SCED305 Practicum III (1 cr.)
Corequisite: SCED 304. A school-based practicum in teaching at the secondary school level.

SCED388A Methods of Teaching Reading, Part I (3 cr.)
An introduction to the reading process and methods for teaching reading. Topics include the major elements of the reading process, the purposes of reading, methods of assessing student reading, cognitive strategies in reading, methods of incorporating reading through student-centered instruction, and motivation for reading.

SCED388B Methods of Teaching Reading, Part II (3 cr.)
Further study of methods for teaching reading focusing on the application of theories, strategies, and practices in daily classroom instruction.

SCED401 Directed Teaching and Seminar/Secondary (6 cr.)
Prerequisite: Completion of the Praxis Exam I: Academic Skills and Praxis II: Subject Assessments/Specialty Series, or, where required, individual State Teacher Examination, either before or during the student teaching experience; 18 s.h. of content coursework; and appropriate additional education coursework. A supervised practicum in teaching at the secondary school level. Classroom teacher responsibilities are increased gradually. Classroom experiences are reviewed, analyzed, and evaluated.

SCED450 Methods of Teaching Reading/Secondary (3 cr.)
A study of various approaches to teaching reading in subject matter fields at the secondary school level. Recent research in the area is explored. Reading philosophy and literature, as applicable to the secondary student, and "how to" lessons are covered.
