MAJOR GENERAL JOHN W. MORGAN III
Major General John W. Morgan III serves as the Commanding General, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Red Cloud, Republic of Korea. He is responsible for the leading, training, maintaining, caring and safe operations of over 10,000 U.S. Soldiers, Airmen and Korean Augmentees to the United States Army (KATUSAs) during Armistice.
Major General Morgan received his commission as a distinguished military graduate through the ROTC program at the University of Delaware in 1979 where he also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology. He holds a Master of Science degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National Defense University.
His past command assignments include Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff, I Corps; Assistant Division Commander (Maneuver), 1st Infantry Division where he deployed with the division to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II; Commander, Division Artillery, 1st Infantry division where he deployed elements of the DIVARTY to Kosovo; and Commander 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) later re-designated 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Major General Morgan’s past staff assignments include Assistant Chief of Staff, CJ3, United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea and Deputy Commanding General, Eighth United States Army; J-5 Representative to the Coalition Provisional Authority, Office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, Bagdad, Iraq; Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Africa) and International Negotiations, J-5, The Joint Staff, later Assistant Deputy Director for International Negotiations, Middle East and Africa; Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Army; Field Artillery Branch Assignment Officer; Battalion S3, 4th Battalion, 29th Field Artillery; 8th Infantry Division, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army; and Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson Colorado.
His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (1OLC), the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), the Army commendation Medal (1OLC), the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
