MyCAA Program
New Financial Assistance Guidlines
23-Jul-2010

Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA)

DoD will resume the MyCAA program.

The Department of Defense has completed the program review and will be making the necessary adjustments to resume the MyCAA program beginning in October 2010.

Starting 8 a.m. (EDT) Monday October 25, 2010, Military OneSource career and education counselors will have a much more active role in supporting military spouses. In addition to understanding resources available via DoD’s financial aid support, they will provide support and assistance to identify and gain access to other federal, state, and local programs. All military spouses of active duty service members will be eligible for career counseling and support.

New financial assistance guidelines

With a focus on the original intent of the program, the Defense Department’s financial assistance program will:

*Be available to spouses of active duty service members in pay grades E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2

*Offer a maximum financial benefit of $4,000 with a fiscal year cap of $2,000. Waivers will be available for spouses pursuing licensure or certification up to the total maximum assistance of $4,000

*Require military spouses to finish their program of study within three years from the start date of the first course

*Be limited to associate degrees, certification, and licensures

Finding the Right One for You
by Chris Johnson
9-Sep-2008

One of the most important decisions in your college career is which major to choose. Many students know right from the beginning what they need or want. Others are unsure or change their major numerous times before finding the one that's right for them.

Accounting - Business - Computers - English - Psychology

Which one is best for you? UMUC understands the gravity of this decision and has developed resources and strategies to assist you.

PCS - Permanent Change of School
How to Transfer Credits Effectively
by Chris Johnson
20-Nov-2006

UMUC prides itself on its ability to pair academic integrity with accessibility to students across the globe. With over 20 undergraduate majors*** available and with a multitude of academic, administrative and career services, both online and in person, UMUC is committed to its mission of meeting "the educational needs of the nontraditional student." No where is this more true than on Okinawa. You can complete most of UMUC's degree programs 100% online or through a combination of online and in-class courses. And, on Okinawa, many programs can be completed entirely through in-class study. (Read more on continuing with UMUC.)

Even so, the US military is as highly diverse a society as it is transient. Often times, availability of programs, scheduling of classes, personal and environmental factors mandate the balancing of needs with wants. We understand this. But, as the Japanese poem says, "Shinai-koto to dekinai-koto wa chigau (What you don't do and what you can't do are not the same.)." In short, regardless of the field you want to pursue, you may not have to wait to return to the US to begin! Many students start taking courses and later transfer the credits for degree completion at another school.

Though a "PCS," or "Permanent Change of School," can be unsettling, it doesn't have to mean starting over. By arming yourself with some basic knowledge and adhering to some sound transfer strategies, you can posit yourself on a straight line course toward degree completion before, during, and after the transfer.

Writing Well with UMUC
Available Resources to Help!
by Chris Johnson
26-Apr-2006

Writing. It's something most of us do every day. And, because writing is something we do everyday, most of us also believe that it is something we do "good enough." But, is it?

Surveys and research suggest that not only is the average individual's writing ability not "good enough," it is just plain bad. Companies complain that workers lack the ability to communicate effectively. Schools gawk at the inability of students to present thoughts and ideas coherently. The evidence would indicate that we need help.

UMUC has two resources available to assist you in stepping up your writing performance.

  • English Labs - During the terms, UMUC on Okinawa offers weekly English Labs. A UMUC instructor attends these labs to assist students with their English and writing questions. The labs are free and open to all current UMUC students. For more information, please contact your local Field Office.

  • UMUC Effective Writing Center (EWC)- UMUC also offers 24 hour, 7 days a week assistance via the internet. The UMUC EWC is free and open to all current students. It offers multiple venues to recieve writing advice and "coaching," an online guide to writing and research, self-study modules, and many other resources and links. For more information, please visit http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/.
