This webpage has a two-fold purpose. Given the appropriate access level for either faculty or students, it is available for UMUC instructors to review history and government common syllabus matters (click on SYLLABUS in the faculty menu) or receive the latest UMUC Asia faculty/administration announcements concerning History and Government (click on NEWSLETTERS in the faculty menu for 2005 and 2006 NEWSLETTERS or HANDOUTS for the latest 2007 one). A faculty member can also find THE FACULTY GUIDELINES FOR THE TEACHING OF HISTORY and THE FACULTY GUIDELINES FOR THE TEACHING OF GOVERNMENT by clicking on the GUIDELINES in the menu section here. At the same time, this webpage is also dedicated to assisting history and government students succeed in their studies, improve analytical writing skills, and move on from there. Consequently, UMUC Asia instructors of history and government are encouraged to alert students to the online opportunities and study-related aids, for instance, which follow.
The enclosed information is designed to be useful to all students of government and history, irrespective of whether they choose to minor or major in these disciplines. For example, the handout "Using the UMUC Library" offers an introduction to a vast array of resources now available online. Students in Korea, Guam, Japan, Singapore, and Okinawa can explore databases and access materials previously available only to students physically present at a stateside university.
Since it is standard practice for history and government instructors to assess learning through essay examinations, it might prove worthwhile to read "Tips on Writing a History Essay."
Paper assignments are also common features in history and government courses. The handout "Developing a Thesis" helps new students formulate and express their thoughts in a meaningful way.
Without question, professional organizations dedicated to history and government are not just for Ph.D. or MA-holders. From their lists of varying job opportunities to available grants/fellowships to the latest, hottest writing in the field, the large websites of the leading historical and political science organizations are relevant to both UMUC Asia undergraduate students and their instructors. Since a majority of UMUC system-wide instructors belong to organizations such as the Organization of American Historians or the American Political Science Association, links on the sidebar take you to the websites maintained by them. The journals published by these organizations highlight scholarly articles and reviews of books and films, but remain a clearinghouse of information on a variety of issues relevant to both students and faculty. Finally, in the OTHER LINKS area of this website, both students and faculty will find the opportunity to view a UMUC-led discussion and analysis of the U.S. Constitution (its history, significance, and relevance to 21st century America and democracy). The latter was the product of Constitution Day observances in mid-September 2005.
For studentSCHOLARSHIP information, please note that if you have an interest in Asian/Pacific history or government, the DENNIS DOOLIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP became available in TERM 4, 2005-06. Six semester hours of Asian Studies are required, a 2.75 grade average, and an essay on an Asian Studies-related topic.
