Carla Shank
Ms. Shank joined the Asian Division faculty in 1996, and brings many years of teaching experience to the program. She began her teaching career in 1967, and has taught for a number of schools in Colorado and with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools. She is a contributing author of numerous articles for Off Duty, the Greeley Tribune, and Sun Publications and is a contributing editor for This Week on Okinawa. Ms. Shank is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, where she earned her B.S. degree in elementary education and psychology. She also holds an M.F.A. in education media and journalism from the University of Northern Colorado. She has taught for UMUC in Okinawa and in the distance education program.

Susan Swan
Dr. Swan has been a professor of Communication, the Humanities, and the Social Sciences for over 30 years. She holds a PhD in Rhetoric and Communication Theory from Ohio State University, an MA in Speech Communication from Ohio State, and an AB in English and Education from Duke University. Originally from the hills of North Carolina, Dr. Swan has taught at a number of institutions, including University of South Dakota, Antioch University, and Miami University (Ohio). She has also spent 6 years in the United Arab Emirates helping found a university for Arab women. She has received teaching awards from University of South Dakota and the Central States Communication Association as well as Faculty-of-the-Year award from Zayed University in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dr. Swan comes to UMUC Asia with extensive teaching experience and has taught more than 70 different content courses, from public speaking and interpersonal communication, to a 48-credit full-year course in world classics, to advertising and film criticism. Her current passion, besides teaching, is silent and classic film. She writes on film for several online magazines, including Examiner.com and Suite101.com. Dr. Swan joined UMUC Asia beginning Fall 2010.
