Steven Shirley

| Dr. Shirley took his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree at Clemson University in political science. He earned his M.A. in political science at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and his Ph.D. in international studies from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The title of his Ph.D. dissertation was Guided by God: Religion and Legitimacy in the Philippines. Dr. Shirley has taught at Old Dominion University, including courses dealing with Asia in the world setting. He also taught for Central Texas College including the PACE program aboard U.S. Navy vessels. He has traveled widely in much of Asia. Dr. Shirley is presently a member of the faculty of Thammasat University in Thailand. He joined the UMUC faculty in 2003, teaching in Bangkok and in the online distance education program. | |

Cardale Smith

| Mr. Smith received his B.S. and M.A., both in political science, from Eastern New Mexico University at Portales, New Mexico, and is a Ph.D. candidate at Clark Atlanta University, working on a dissertation entitled 'Public Policy of Euthanasia in America.' He has taught at Clovis Community College in New Mexico, Eastern New Mexico University, and Central Texas College in Korea. Mr. Smith has been a probation and parole officer in Hobbs, New Mexico, and has also been active in politics in New Mexico. Since joining the Asian Division faculty in 1998 he has taught in Sasebo, the Tokyo area, Okinawa and Korea, and in the distance education program. | |
